Every fourth Thursday in April (this year on April 25), more than 150 countries in the world celebrate the International Girls in the Information and Communication Technologies Day, established by the United Nations. For 14 years, the Association of Business Women in Serbia has been marking this event, and for 9 years, the schoolgirl competition for the best video work “Capture an Idea” has been organized.

This year, the event was held under the name A1 Girls in the ICT Day. As in previous years, institutional support was provided by the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia headed by Mrs. Ana Brnabic, the many-year honorary patron of the event. Mihailo Jovanovic was the honorary sponsor of the “Capture an Idea” competition for the second year in a row.

Awards for the best video works were awarded on April 25 at the final ceremony in the House of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, which was attended by over 200 girls from all over the country. In addition to the selection for the best video work, visits (live and online) of girls – students of the seventh and eighth grades of elementary schools to companies were organized.

Activities within the manifestation:

• The “Capture an Idea” contest lasted from March 11 to April 10, 2024. The work of the commission, made up of representatives of institutions, organizations and companies, is organized online.
• Visits by girls to companies from the ICT sector, those whose owners are women or women are in management positions, or companies whose activities are atypically female. Meetings and conversations with female managers, both live and via online platforms (Zoom, MS Teams), were organized from March 28 to May 31, 2024. Online visits additionally enabled schools and students to meet female managers outside their place of residence.

Girls in ICT Day 2024 in numbers:

• 11.229 girls participated in the events in 14 years
• There were a total of 1.278 participants in this year’s event, of which:
• 1.125 girls, students of the final grades of elementary school participated in the visits
• 153 girls participated in the “Catch an Idea” competition
• 150 teachers – coordinators
• 100 schools from 45 cities in Serbia applied to participate in one of the activities (visits + competition)
• 14 institutions and organizations provided institutional support to the events: Government of the Republic of Serbia, National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ministry of Information and Telecommunications, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, Ministry of Tourism and Youth, Ministry of State Administration and Local Self-Government, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, United Nations Agency for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women in Serbia (UN Women), European SME Week, International Telecommunications Union UN (ITU), CANSEE (Canadian-Serbian Business Association) and UNDP Serbia.
• 10 companies supported the event: A1 Serbia (General sponsor), EurologSistem, Klett (Partner of the event), Generali osiguranje Srbija, Erste Banka, Telekom, Blumen Group (Friend of the event), Enel PS, NS Promoteam and Mega Solution (Support of the event).
• 50 visits were organized during the event (online and offline visits, final award ceremony). • 59 video works arrived at the “Capture an Idea” contest
• 58 video works met the criteria and entered the competition
• 153 girls from 37 schools participated in the competition

• 15 works (teams, 39 girls in total) entered the finals of the “Capture an Idea” competition
• 3 works (9 competitors) won the first three places and were awarded
• 1 special award (3 contestants) for the best presentation of the idea
• 250 girls at the Closing Ceremony, from 19 elementary schools throughout Serbia (13 cities)

• Olivera Popovic, Vice-president of ABW Serbia and coordinator of the Girls in ICT Day project, Branka Pudrlja Durbaba, Chief Director for sales and customer satisfaction of A1 Serbia and the Minister of Information and Telecommunications, Mihailo Jovanovic, awarded valuable prizes to the winning teams of the Catch the Idea competition.

The ceremony was opened by the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, a long-term patron of the event. Mihailo Jovanovic, Minister of Information and Telecommunications, Branka Pudrlja Durbaba, Chief Director for sales and customer satisfaction of A1 Serbia and Olivera Popovic, Vice president of the Association of Business Women in Serbia, addressed those present. The panel “The future is in technology: Empowering girls in ICT” was also held, in which Plamena Halaceva, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia, member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences Manuela Stamatovic, owner and Director of Puzzle Consulting, and Marijana Gligorić, co-founder and Executive Director of BrigIT.dev, as well as Zoja Kukić, Haptic Synaptic took part.
